Vergne began his career in karting before advancing through the junior single-seater ranks, ultimately joining the Red Bull Junior Team. He made his F1 debut with Scuderia Toro Rosso in 2012, where he raced for three seasons before moving to focus on other racing categories. Vergne joined Formula E in its inaugural season in 2014 and quickly established himself as one of the top drivers in electric racing. Driving for DS Techeetah, he became the first and only driver to win two Formula E World Championships consecutively, claiming titles in the 2017–2018 and 2018–2019 seasons.
